Since the smoking ban came in to force in the UK in July 2007, people are finding new and inventive ways of getting nicotine without having to go and stand outside in the cold. Some people are turning to gum, patches or inhalers to help quit, and some are taking up vaping or the use of nicotine pouches.
Whilst the use of nicotine pouches is more common on the continent, in the UK they are much less common and the majority of the people we spoke to had never tried them, some had never even heard of them. So what are they?
Nicotine pouches are tobacco free pouches containing nicotine in a small bag placed in the mouth, under the lip and over the top gums. The nicotine is subsequently absorbed through the gums. Due to the lack of tobacco products in them, the products are white and will not contribute to teeth staining. You can get the pouches in a variety of flavours and strengths and so they are suitable for the majority of nicotine consumers. This is true whether you want to change the way you ingest nicotine, or want to move away from consumption altogether.
Due to the fact that they are incredibly discreet, and the fact that you can get some nicotine into your system on a night out without having to go and stand out in the cold and rain (one of the most common complaints from British smokers after the smoking ban), their popularity is increasing rapidly. Another reason for this increase in usage is that whilst like vaping the products are available in a variety of flavours and strengths, no additional products or equipment is required. Vaping is also being banned in more and more places, and with the trusty British weather all but guaranteeing a downpour on any day all year round, that trip outside is eliminated by using the nicotine pouches.
